Cauliflower Rice and Corn Salad

Hold your lunch, things are about to change. Forever. I recently discovered the wonders of cauliflower rice, a darling of Paleo, raw, and vegetarian diets alike. And now, a darling of mine too. It’s a super creative solution for grain-free versions of things like sushi rice or couscous tabbouleh. You know, things like that. And while I was skeptical at first, after giving it a cauliflower rice salad try, I’ve become seriously obsessed. Not just because it is easy and surprisingly filling. But also because, once you ‘ve made it, there are so many ways you can use it. And note: even though […]

Low-So Cauliflower Vegetable Bread

Kale may be a superfood. But cauliflower is a food unicorn. It’s totally magical. With the right recipe and ingredients, cauliflower can turn into a pizza crust. Or white pizza sauce. Mashed “potatoes.”  Popcorn. Rice. A steak. CHORIZO!!! Vegan macaroni and “cheese.” And even a ricotta-like situation (which I have in my new book and coming soon to theKitchn.com, but you can find a similar recipe here). Come to think of it, cauliflower is not just a unicorn; it’s a top tier impersonator. And if it could, I’m sure it would headline as Cher in Vegas. The point is, now that I’m on an even more limited […]

2017 Low-So Reboot

Happy 2017 dearest internet friends! With the new year, I’m entering my 34th year of life and my 13th year living with lupus and kidney disease. And while the past 365 days have had their ups and downs. And downs. And more downs. They also brought a renewed faith in food and its power to heal. See: 34 years old with the same stage 4 kidneys. Still kicking! As you may remember, last year, I welcomed January with a big anti-inflammation overhaul of my diet — no wheat or gluten, no eggs, no dairy, no sugar, no soy, no nightshade vegetables, NO […]

Low-So Dukka-Spiced Salmon Patties

With Memorial Day around the corner, I wanted to fill up your arsenal with low-so good BBQ dishes. And while you can always stick with traditional mains and sides, your special food needs are always a good excuse to get a little more creative. To mix things up. And serve low-so, gluten-free fish patties instead. This recipe and photo comes from my new book (which you can PREORDER NOW!). Which I hope gives you all the tips and tools (including recipes), to cook with flexibility and confidence. And while you can use the recipes just as they are written, I hope […]

Low-So Good Thanksgiving Roundup

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. I repeat: Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. That’s because it marks the start of “snuggle” season, where the air gets cooler. The neighborhood gets covered in lights. The music on the radio changes from Top 40 to jingle bells. Evenings get filled with alternating smells of squash soup and cinnamon. And, as for the holiday itself, the home and the table gets filled with tradition, memories, and family and friends. But if you’re on a low-so or really ANY kind of special diet, holiday season may give you both stress and indigestion. And that’s because so […]

Way to Well Tour: Part Two

So I did it. Sunday morning I stepped onto a really adorable blue and red bus. I met a bunch of friendly RDs and phlebotomists and pharmacists. I walked through a line of (painless! free!) tests. And I took my health into my own two hands by taking a moment to check in with my body and make sure all my numbers (blood pressure, blood/glucose level, and body mass index) were all in tip top shape. I also found out that my “health age” was a spry 18. And if that doesn’t make a mom of a two-year-old who sometimes eats skittles for […]

The Big Low-So Thanksgiving Post

We’ve arrived. The ultimate food-centered holiday. THANKSGIVING! Where we stuff our guts full of tradition and mashed potatoes. And I’ve got a 10-pound turkey’s worth of tips and recipes for you, to make sure that your table remains full of flavor and favorite dishes, while keeping the feast bright, fresh, healthy, and of course low-sodium. But I also want to take this moment (and electronic Internet page) to throw something else out there: Let’s use this Thanksgiving to honor not just ourselves and our family tree, but the culinary history of others. Amidst everything happening right now and all that has bubbled to the surface of our daily lives, […]

Low-So Asian-Inspired Pantry

HOW IS IT JULY!? I feel like we just started to celebrate the arrival of cherries and figs and tomatoes (and my new book, LOW-SO GOOD). And suddenly, the big mid-summer holiday is upon us. One filled with burgers, grills, red-checkered potlucks. And of course FIREWORKS. But this Fourth, don’t just look in the sky for something explosive. Look in your cabinet. Because if you are well-stocked, you’ll find some banging flavors to play with, full of color and surprise, that will leave you in “ahhhh” (get it? bad firework/food joke.) So instead of typical BBQ fare, play with your food and spice things up […]

LOW-SO GOOD! And my Low-So Travel Pantry!

HOORAY HURRAH HOOHA HUZZAH!!! My new book is officially out! And can be purchased online and of course, anywhere books are sold (and if your store doesn’t have it, ask them to carry it!). If you can’t tell, I’m extremely excited that this baby is finally in the world. It is the GUIDE (yes, guide!) that I always wanted to have. One which explores solutions to the challenges one may meet in a low-sodium life. From your tastebuds to your office kitchen (remember that microwave noodle soup?). And while I wrote it for you, I also wrote it for your friend […]

3 Flexible Easter Feasts!

Whether or not you plan to celebrate Easter, it is a perfect time to start perfecting your brunch game. Because it is SPRING! And spring means warmer(ish) weather. And a great excuse to start gathering friends together — inside or outside — to enjoy an array of sweet and savory treats. And maybe a low-so good beet bloody Mary or two. But here’s the challenge: How do you feed a gaggle of guests all while tending to your low-so needs as well as the dietary needs of others (think: egg-free, gluten-free, Paleo, Whole30, vegetarian, etc). All while making something stunning. And not too time or budget consuming? The answer is the […]
