Low-Sodium Thanksgiving: Sides

Here’s the quick and tasty: when losing the salt over the holidays, it doesn’t mean you’re burdened with bland meals. Instead, it means you have the opportunity (and duty!) to really stretch the classics and bring your favorite dishes to life with surprising flavors, exciting pairings, colorful twists. So over the next week, I’m going to do my best to stuff you full of low-sodium Thanksgiving tips. Keep an eye on Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook for my favorite bites from the past and my new tricks for this year. And check back here often for recipes that will keep your […]

I’m Back Broccoli Dip

So I had a heart-to-heart with a bushel of broccoli the other day. And here’s the deal — it’s tired of artichoke and onions getting all the attention. Understandable. And with all the football games and family gatherings coming up I figured this was a good time to switch things up a bit and show those tiny little green trees some love. By whipping them into a dip, of course. Now since this is my first post since bringing home my baby eggplant (pictures coming soon), I am a little rusty and I’ll have to keep this quick. But isn’t […]

Low-Sodium Food Fireworks

If you’re looking for something explosive, make this spicy mayo. Mix these two ingredients together: a 1/4 cup of the no-sodium mayo and a 1/2 teaspoon of the no-sodium chili paste. Then dip something, like sliced bell peppers or cauliflower chunks, into it. Bite, chew, eat. And taste the fire. Serious fire. It is still amazing to me that two simple low-sodium ingredients can pack so much punch. And that they can quickly transform anything — from a cool coleslaw to fajita fillings — into a meal that will give today’s sparklers a run for their money. Today, I’ve put […]

Mistakes and Low-Sodium Pickled Cherries

Last week I posted about Labor day and roasted garbanzo beans. Turns out, it was Memorial day. This is what some people refer to as a “mistake.” And like frittatas, it is something I make with healthy frequency. At least once a day. And that’s probably a generous underestimate. For the frittatas and the mistakes. As for this latest mishap? It is definitely more embarrassing than misreading the package of Gluten Flour while baking gluten free crumble (which I did last week). But way less disastrous than setting my kitchen oven on fire while making tortillas (which I did last […]

Low-Sodium Labor (slash, Memorial) Day & Baked Garbanzos

(Before you read, be warned: this post mentions Labor Day many times which, as you may have noticed, should actually be Memorial Day. But because I believe in embracing mistakes, I’m leaving it. So please, enjoy. Even if it’s a few months early) Do you know why we celebrate Labor Day? Neither do I. But I do know that I love three day weekends, especially those filled with picnics, potlucks, and BBQs. So here’s a recipe for a crispy snacketizer — salt-free’d from Heidi Swanson’s Super Natural Everyday vegetarian food bible –which will keep you and your friends satisfied between […]

Low-Sodium Brisket Taco

Life can change on a dime. One day, you’re a brisket. The next, a beef taco. But before we get to talking about either dish, there is one important truth you need to know about this particular cut of meat: Brisket can be juicy, luscious, drippy, and moist. Or it can be dry, dry, dry. So it is the sauce — along with a slooooow roast — that makes this cut of meat tender. Not to mention a perfect place to experiment in building low-sodium flavors. For a quick beef tutorial, I turned to the Pioneer Woman’s Passover Brisket recipe and […]

Low-Sodium Kugel Muffins

I like making muffins. Especially out of unexpected muffin ingredients. Like risotto, meatloaf, and now, kugel. Kugel is basically Yiddish for noodle egg casserole. And while it is typically sweet and puckery — with ingredients like apple and sour cream — its basic eggy, milky base works well with savory ingredients, too. Like tons of green garlic and dill. Kugel also bakes up perfectly in a muffin tin. Fancy that. So while you can always get your kugel on in a casserole dish… Feel free to think beyond tradition. Replace those higher-sodium ingredients (cottage cheese, sour cream, salt, cheese) with […]

Low-Sodium Matzo Cracker S’Mores

This Passover, show off a little. Pharaohs, plagues, parting red seas – it’s clear that this holiday is all about flare. Begging you to take your bag of tricks and use them to put on a show. Because even though the Passover sedar focuses on the old testament, Passover dinner can be about trying something new. Mixing things up. And making low-sodium chocolate matzo s’mores. Where did this idea come from? Call it a burning bush in a dessert…or just my wonderful sis-in-law who recently showed up at my door with a spring surprise: chocolate covered matzo crackers that she […]

Low-Sodium Egg Nog

Warning: There is avocado in this recipe. And this is not a warning to turn around and run away from this egg nog. This is a warning that socks will be blown straight off by the creamy lusciousness that is this sodium-friendly drink. The all-natural, gluten, vegan, low-sodium wizardry comes from the bloggers at Cocomama and the only ingredients I left out were the banana (cause I didn’t have one) and the liquor (because it was 10am). But you can definitely make this drink as is. And how’s that for a Christmas miracle? Give it a literal whirl tonight, tomorrow, anytime to […]

Low-Sodium Gifts You’ll Love

I got a hairdryer once for Channukah. I was six or ten, or some age when brattiness was still somewhat acceptable. I wanted rollerblades. And I’ve never let my parents forget my horror at opening a medium-sized, expertly-wrapped box to find not a toy, or anything with wheels, or a doll that I would stop playing with in exactly 23.7 days. But a hairdryer. Secretly, though, I now wish I received hairdryers every holiday. Well, not hairdryers exactly because that would be silly. And a lot of hairdryers. But useful items. Like a really good vacuum that is easy to […]
