#YOLOsodium

Holy calendar, it’s February. And as you know from  past years (and trips to the drug store), this month is all about cupids and arrows, valentines and love letters, and of course, lots of hearts. But not just the kind filled with chocolate and candy. It’s also about the big one, right there, in your own chest. Which is THE most important heart of all. And worth celebrating in a big way. For the last three Februarys (one, two, three), I’ve rung in Heart Health Month with my annual Recipe Rally. A big online potluck where amazing bloggers from around the […]

Weekly Obsessions 12.20.13

Okay, first of a all I finally made those banana bon bons from Nom Nom Paleo that I was talking about a few weeks ago. And you know what? BONKERS. Totally crazy good. Absolutely bananas. Literally. And speaking of bananas, um hello, next week is Christmas. And even for those of us that don’t celebrate this holiday, we all know that the next few days will be hurried with wrapping, gifting, and spreading love. If this stresses you out a little, have another bon bon. But hopefully these low-sodium gift guides (here and here) have helped you make your wish […]

Weekly Obsession 12.6.2013

Holy December. Have you guys started your holiday shopping yet? I totally most definitely have not. I haven’t even written down my  wishes for pretty plates and new measuring cups and a sous chef named Jacques. I have, however, been very busy eyeballing other people’s gorgeous holiday guides. Here. Here. And Here. Which made me think that it is time to make a little list of my own (or perhaps several) to help you get or gift all the goodies one needs for a great low-sodium diet this holiday season. To start, let’s talk about that beginner cook in your life. The one who […]

Low-Sodium Scotch Egg

As a child, feeling awe struck occurred with great frequency. There were magic tricks (someone has my nose!), there were waffles (which start as gooey liquid and then become, well, WAFFLES), there were butterflies (caterpillars…need I say more ?), there was glitter (so glittery), there was Cirque Du Soleil (which meant hours, okay a lifetime, of dancing by myself in my room). There was awe. Everywhere. Then logic and middle school and to-do lists crept in. And feeling giddily overwhelmed by bubbles and full moons seemed silly. Awe got covered up by “ah whatevers.” And stopping to play with leaves […]

Greens, Eggs, and Kale French Toast

Let’s talk about leftovers. Kale pesto leftovers, to be exact. After hosting three, yes THREE, parties last weekend, I had two big cups of kale pesto leftovering in my fridge. And after inserting the kale pesto remains into pastas and potatoes and potato pastas, I still had half a dozen globs or so to play with. Which brings me to toast. French toast, to be exact. Typically, french toast is made with a mixture of eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and perhaps a pinch of cinnamon and a sprinkle of powdered sugar. In sum: it’s sweet. But as you […]

BBQ Apple Chips

Here’s the thing about October. It’s all about apples. Apple cider. Apple picking. Apple fennel soup. Apple pie. Apple cobbler. Apple potato hash browns. Appleseed, Johnny. Apple candy. Apple bobbing. Apple baking. (I think I’m having  a Forrest Gump moment). Point being: apples are super transformative. They are also naturally low in sodium and kidney friendly. And from the long list of apple recipes and apple activities that are possible, it’s pretty clear  that apples are the star of this fall party. So move aside pumpkin. This fruit has your number. But that’s not the end of the story. Because there’s […]

Weekly Obsessions

Oh hey new Sodium Girl column! Nice to finally meet you! Yes siree. It’s here. A weekly round-up of awesome and tasty nibbles from the Internet that will keep you appropriately busy and full and inspired all weekend long. For a while now, I have wanted to create a space where I could tell you all about the cool articles I read, dishes I tried, or products that landed on my doorstep during the past week(ish). A space where I could answer  questions and give you the information needed to get creative and silly and totally salt-free in your kitchen […]

Cucumber Baguette Sandwiches

I’m totally obsessed with this idea. It’s genius. It’s hearty. It’s healthy (I mean, it’s pretty much a salad in sandwich form). It’s easy to make and easy to make with your own flare. It’s gluten-free. It’s low-sodium. It can easily be made vegetarian, if you’re into that. It can clean your house and  do your laundry (not really). But I’m pretty positive it’s about to change your life. And your work lunches or Sunday afternoon brunches. It’s a cucumber baguette. Yup. How did we not discover this before? I still don’t know. And while nothing really compares to the crisp […]

Salt-Free DIY Dumplings

You better believe that a little soy sauce wouldn’t stop me from DIYing one of the most enviable bites around town: dumplings. Because if you’re like me, your relatives LOVE dim sum and as a result, you’ve spent a lot of time soaking in the sights and smells of these savory Asian bites. Dreaming of having a pile of salt-free dumplings to call your own. I’ve spent years now waiting, watching, and researching all in the name of recreating these tastes at home. And recently, thanks to one of my favorite food site, theKitchn.com  (if you don’t go there regularly, […]

Low-Sodium Library Giveaway

I’m going to keep today’s post short and sweet. Like this munchkin. I’M DOING A GIVEAWAY! Yes. It’s true. One of the biggest perks of my “job” is that I receive a ridiculous number of amazing cookbooks. Of all kinds. Cookbooks on avocados, gluten-free cooking, soda, and even dumplings. And while most of these books contain salt in the ingredient lists, they all spark my low-sodium creativity and result in heavenly meals at my low-sodium table. But here’s the best part. My shelves overflowing. Which means it is time to pass this edible inspiration forward. It’s time to help you […]
