Roasted Lamb Thanksgiving Roundup

Alright friends. Get ready for a roundup of Thanksgiving dishes that is going to be bigger than last year’s 26-pound turkey. Hint: anytime you see anything bolded in orange, that is a link to a recipe or tips. So click away for total Thanksgiving domination. But before we jump into the lentil gravy boat (see how I did that?) and talk stuffing, sides, and other non-traditional dishes, let me say this about this year’s low-sodium holiday feast: break tradition. I give you permission. It’s the easiest way to free yourself from the salty brines and canned soups, and create a whole new […]

Whole Foods Market Hack Challenge

Yesterday I expressed my love (obsession) for Whole Foods Market. And today, I am going to show you — in great detail and delicious food — exactly why their store rocks my low-sodium world. As a part of the Whole Foods Market Hacks challenge, I was tasked with the task of creating TWO MEALS A DAY to feed the THREE MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY all for $125. Or in other words roughly 42 PLATES OF FOOD FOR $3 DOLLARS EACH. Got that? And let’s be honest, while I keep to a strict low-sodium diet, I do not keep to small (slash: normal) portion sizes. Sometimes I eat steak the size of my […]

Unprocessed: Coconut Choco Tacos

As a little kid, I loved the idea of school. So much so that, even before I entered Kindergarten, I made my parents create fake homework assignments for me. And once I got older and started to get real homework, I still loved school. Mostly because of the colored pens I got to buy every August in prep for the year ahead. And Choco Tacos. While my parents kept a pretty healthy household — no sodas, no sugary cereals, no candy, although I’m sure they had their own private stash — when it was finals week, all bets were off. And our awesome […]

Low-Sodium Coconut Cinnamon Ice Cream

Plug your ears, because everyone is about to scream for ice cream. Something happened last week. I baked a batch of botched gingersnap cookies, which I promptly turned into crumbs with the help of a plastic bag and a heavy pan. I then made those crumbs into a pie crust (which also resulted in a major baking fail). And then, after all of that, I decided to make ice cream. Without dairy. Without an ice cream maker. Without having ever done it before. Now before I go on to tell you about this ice cream, let me tell you a […]

Weekly Obsessions

Oh hey new Sodium Girl column! Nice to finally meet you! Yes siree. It’s here. A weekly round-up of awesome and tasty nibbles from the Internet that will keep you appropriately busy and full and inspired all weekend long. For a while now, I have wanted to create a space where I could tell you all about the cool articles I read, dishes I tried, or products that landed on my doorstep during the past week(ish). A space where I could answer  questions and give you the information needed to get creative and silly and totally salt-free in your kitchen […]

Island Sides

Today, we continue our expedition into the world of low sodium Hawaiian cuisine.  But first, a spoiler alert: Friday brings a big bang of a recipe for drippy, delicious, fall-off-the-bone Char Sui Spare Ribs.  So leave your restraint and dignity at the door and grab yourself a bib for this one.  Until then, I’m tiding you over with some low sodium Island sides that are as essential to a complete Hawaiian meal as a tropical drink with a miniature umbrella. First, Coconut Black Rice, or as it is also called, “Forbidden Rice.”  This black grain turns a deep purple when […]
