Low-Sodium Cauliflower Steaks

So let’s say you’re having a big group over for dinner and you plan on making this: But we’ll get back to the beef another time. Because, let’s say that you or one of your guests could not eat the meat you see above. What do you do? The answer is cauliflower steaks. Yes, a hearty main made from a small head of cauliflower that is chopped into thirds to create slabs of non-meat steakery. Trust me, vegetarians, vegans, and those watching their sodium and protein intake will appreciate the creativity. They will also appreciate the smokey seasoning that you rub […]

Answering CDC’s Sodium Call

Yesterday, the CDC (and NPR) released one of the most comprehensive reports on the origins of America’s high sodium intake. Turns out it can be boiled down to ten popular foods. What comes as a surprise to most is that sodium doesn’t just exist in that shaker. Or that bottle of soy sauce. Or on top of French fries. But that high sodium counts can be found in soups, cheeses, and pizza and even more surprisingly, in less obvious culprits like bread, milk, and that seemingly healthy whole wheat sandwich with oven-roasted deli meat. That “healthy choice” lunch alone, even […]

Low-Sodium Winter Comforts

Here are the things I learned this week: 1) Although I love being barefoot or in sandals, rain boots are definitely the right choice when it’s raining. 2) Madonna still totally rocks. Like, seriously. 3) Steaks can be made out of cauliflower (see: Thursday’s post). 4) Curling up on the couch with something warm (i.e. a blanket, freshly baked bread, breakfast for dinner, and soup) is the perfect way to ward off chilly weather. So below, find some of my favorite cozy, low-sodium recipes for when the temperature drops. Make one, two, or all three this week. And save your […]

Low-Sodium Super Bowl

I apologize for the brevity of this post. But as I run out the door, hair half-dried, sweater half-on, I wanted to make sure you were prepped and ready for the big game on Sunday. Of course, there are all my old super bowl favorites, which can be found here on this newish nifty site, Pinterest. But I also wanted to pass on a few tips for you to add a low-sodium, flavorful twist to other classic Super Bowl favorites. The first, hot wings. And not just any hot wings. Mandarin Orange Hot Wings. We’re talking sweet and spicy and […]

February First and Final Farewell

As we say rabbit, rabbit for a new month, we are also (sadly) saying goodbye to our guest blogger Chelsea and her good gal pal, Meradith, who so bravely took on Low-So January even though neither had any good health reason to kick salt from the kitchen. If I used emoticons, I’d definitely put a frowny face right here. These two ladies took no short-cuts when it came to no-salt living. They braved meals out, meals with others, lunches in the office, and weekends far away from home. By watching them, it became very clear: with patience, practice, preparation, and […]

Lo-So January Week 4: Chelsea Salt-Free’s Her Very Own Recipe

The girl doesn’t need any introduction. So let’s just get to straight to words from Chelsea and week four of her heroic journey through the low-sodium world… Week Four has been marked by two milestones: entertaining Low-So style and branching out beyond Sodium Girl’s ravishing recipes to create my very own. Last weekend, I hosted a little fête for a friend’s birthday and really wanted to showcase some tasty low-so treats. Remember: I live below the Mason-Dixon Line. Three amigas of mine host an annual Bacon-Off (and, it’s incredible/one of my favorite days of the year). Sodium is alive, well, […]

Greatist Low-Sodium Advice

You know what I love? I love when I see non-sodium related blogs and websites talking about a low-sodium lifestyle. And a few weeks ago, the latest in online Health and Fitness — Greatist — offered 21 Lower-Sodium Solutions to help slash high-salt continent from one’s life. And for a bunch of food and fitness writers who do not have to keep the diet themselves (and admittedly love pretzels with mustard), they really hit the salt-shaker on the head. Some of my favorites? Eggs for baking soda This superfood an do more than round out a morning omelet. Depending on the recipe, one […]

Low-Sodium Inspiration Pizza

Inspiration. For me, it comes from cravings. From menus. From other people’s dinners. From smells. From pictures in magazines. From trips elsewhere. From ingredients that are past their prime. From questions sent in by you. From dreams I have about cooking. From prepared food at Whole Foods. From television cooking contests. From websites like this. And blogs like that. From childhood memories. From the determination to turn the word “no” into a “yes.” From the season and what’s in season. And did I mention cravings? Yeah, those inspire me too. And this past week, I needed a good slice of […]

Lo-So January Week 3: Chelsea Improvises

I’ve dragged friends and loved ones to plenty of amateur sketch comedy hours to know that improv can be pretty painful. But when it comes to cooking–especially low-sodium cooking–improve is essential. And totally delicious. Take last night’s dinner, for example. Forget about what happened when the chicken crossed the road. Let’s focus instead on what happened when the chicken and some chopped coleslaw cabbage met my crock pot. BBQ chicken stew. That’s what happened. Inside my bag of tricks were: three poultry thighs, garlic, red onion, crispy cabbage, Stonehouse 27 Tomato and Chilies sauce, and fresh squeezed orange juice. And […]
