Low-Sodium Citrus Pasta

What do you do with a bushel of grapefruit, oranges, and lemons? If you said juice, that’s a great idea (and, yes please, I’d love a glass). If you said pasta, that’s even better (and I’ll take a whole bowl, thank you). I can’t take credit for this idea. It’s genius. I was actually served citrus pasta while dining out at one of my favorite local restaurants: Firefly. They always do me right with incredibly thoughtful, salt-free food. And this bowl of noodles proved to be no different–and, I mean, I’m talking giant soup bowl that was twice the size […]

Greatist Low-Sodium Advice

You know what I love? I love when I see non-sodium related blogs and websites talking about a low-sodium lifestyle. And a few weeks ago, the latest in online Health and Fitness — Greatist — offered 21 Lower-Sodium Solutions to help slash high-salt continent from one’s life. And for a bunch of food and fitness writers who do not have to keep the diet themselves (and admittedly love pretzels with mustard), they really hit the salt-shaker on the head. Some of my favorites? Eggs for baking soda This superfood an do more than round out a morning omelet. Depending on the recipe, one […]

Low-Potassium Potato Skins

When I receive a request, I respond. At some point. And this week, I received two requests. The first from a very special friend and fellow kidney patient who craves the taste of crispy potato skins. And the second from our very own Low-So January heroine, Chelsea, who is hosting a little get together this weekend and craves some tiny treats to impress her friends. So in one quick post, I’m going to answer both questions. Let’s start with the potato skins. Most of you out there–who are diligently watching your sodium intake–can handle a traditional potato skin recipe as […]

Orange Tahini Popcorn Clusters

You have been so patient. You’ve watched me unpack my website boxes. You’ve kindly tapped my shoulder when something is not working right. You haven’t even complained about posts being a tad late or that they are slow to be emailed or that the corn dogs I gave you last week were a little cold. Thank you. Many of you have even taken the time to re-subscribe, which is amazing. And for all of you who have yet to sign your name in permanent electronic ink and declare your undying loyalty to low-sodium food, no worries. Please, take your time. […]

A Fund for Jennie: Update

Kohlrabbit, kohlrabbit everyone and happy September 1st to you all. I know it’s Thursday and you didn’t expect to see me pop up in your inbox or your feed, but I have an important announcement to make. So here I am. With some low-sodium pickles and big news. The Sodium Girl Starter Basket Auction is officially closed. We raised $200 for A Fund for Jennie, which is getting matched by a generous SG reader. That’s $400. That’s amazing. And because you all are so inspiring, I’m actually sending goody goody baskets to everyone who bid on the salt-free auction item. So […]

A Fund for Jennie

I was having a hard time deciding on what to write about today. I thought about talking about my new shoes–or actually slippers which have lint-lifters on the bottom so that you can scrub your floors as you shuffle about your home. I tested them out yesterday. I looked silly. And I discovered that my floor is really dirty. I thought about salads, because so many of you wonderful people seem to like sprinkling salt on them and want an alternative to bump up the taste. (Here’s the quick answer: 1. try cayenne pepper, black pepper, a sprinkle of salt-free […]

So old readers, say hello to new readers. And for everyone checking this blog out for the first time, let me tell you a bit about Sodium Girl. like French fries. A lot. Through the Camera Lens

This is a camera. Taking pictures of low-sodium, salt-free Kale Kelp Salad. Which I made just for you. And this is the wonderful team behind that camera: Matt Armendariz (who among other things wrote a book about food on sticks) and Adam Pearson (who among other things is the genius stylist who so elegantly placed that food on the sticks). This past week, I was lucky enough to be invited to Matt and Adam’s food photography wonderland in LA. And as they twisted noodles and napkins, I sat excitedly on the sidelines, watching the two (and their trusty band of assistants) […]

Low-Sodium Square One

I received a couple emails this week from readers who had been newly diagnosed with some life-altering situation and, as you can probably guess, had been told to start a low-sodium diet. Some of them were friends. Some of them were strangers. Some were nearing their sixties. Some had barely left the nest at twenty. All of them were stunned. So while I had a lovely seven layer low-sodium salad ready for you today I thought it might be better to pause from the cooking and talk about taking on this low-sodium diet, starting at square one. First, it is […]
