The Great Migration

Well if you’ve landed on this page today, then you are really special. Mostly because you know how to use your computer and Google and you’ve already discovered the new Sodium Girl site. But also because you are seeing some exciting back-end magic happening before your very eyes. If none of that made sense, let me translate: I’m upgrading my blog so that it has more exciting widgets and knick-knacks, which means more fun stuff for you and your keyboard. But as I am making the transition – and making it as smooth as salt-free peanut butter for all of […]

Do You Yuba?

What is a Yuba, you ask? Well to begin, let’s talk about what it is not: A musical instrument that makes fart noises. A new dance craze that consists of squiggly moves and Gumby arms. A cross-breed of a Lama and a sheep, although this would be a great name for that combination. So crazy scientists reading this blog post, take note. But because “no’s” don’t get you very far in life (and neither do double negatives), let’s move on to what a Yuba actually is. Yuba is the name for fresh tofu skins. Silky and pliable, they are an […]

Love Your Heart Recipe Rally

Ah, love is officially in the air. Can’t you smell it? Chocolate, rose petals, lavender, maybe even the citrus sweetness of a slow-roasted, blood orange, pulled pork. Okay, maybe that last one only spells “love” to someone like me. But whatever olfactory essences speak soft, sweet nothings of amour to your nose, eyes, and ears, one thing is true when it comes to your mouth: you can taste love when it is poured into food. So I started thinking. February 14th is Valentines Day. February is also National Heart Health Month. And February welcomed the USDA’s newest dietary recommendations, which […]

Sausage Pepper Poppers

Sausage Pepper Poppers. Try saying that ten times fast. No seriously, try it. It’s hard. So if you’re looking for something much easier to do, you should try making these bite-sized, low sodium snacks instead. All you need is some baby peppers (of the bell or jalapeno variety), some ground meat (turkey, pork, beef, or chicken…any kind will do), some fresh herbs and spices (fennel, cumin, paprika, and onion powder work well), and your creative caps (which needed to be dusted off anyways). In a small bowl, make your own sausage, which basically consists of the ground meat, any spices […]

Wassabi Edamame

Today’s Super Bowl post is dedicated to the one true reason (besides the gluttony of food) that I sit down and watch football games. Commercials. And to fully celebrate that truth, let’s begin with this simple video. Roll it, Budweiser. If you haven’t guessed it yet – and hey, it’s in the title – I’m paying homage to not only some of the greatest Super Bowl advertising, but one of the greatest bar food bites: wasabi snacks. Now, traditionally, these crunchy treats are made with peas and loads of sodium. But thanks to a suggestion from one of my food […]

Queso Fundido

Hello friends, as of late and longtime. This week we are training for the big event on Sunday – the Super Bowl – and we are starting with a dish that is loosely dedicated to Cheese Heads across the nation. Today, we are making a dip that will satisfy low sodium eaters and salty snackers alike. Today, we are putting the “o.k.” in queso and the “fun” in fundido. Traditionally, queso fundido is a creamy blend of cheeses that includes tomatoes, chorizo, and peppers and is often served with tortilla chips. So to make it low sodium, I needed to […]

Awesome Bucco and Awards

I think it’s safe to say that this week has left me feeling quite full. I’m full from a special olive oil tasting I had at Long Meadow Ranch and thrilled by a newfound appreciation for how a little drop of the “good” stuff can make a bite of citrus burst. I’m full from Wednesday night’s salt-free Mediterranean blogger dinner with Farm & a Frying Pan and Anne Pao (two ladies always up for a low sodium challenge), and my latest recipe for “awesome” bucco (modesty not included). And I’m full of that giddy, buzzy feeling that comes when you feel […]

Product Alert

Here are things I love: fried chicken, french fries, tempura, onion rings, and when it comes to low sodium living, being wrong. Which has nothing to do with being dipped in hot oil…thank goodness. My great mistake begins with yogurt. For years, I have avoided it since many dairy products are high in sodium. But with my recent travels, I started contemplating the yogurt compromise. At airports and on-the-road, low sodium food is scarce. I tend to look for things like steamed white rice, fresh fruit, and hard boiled eggs to keep me fueled and my stomach quiet. But often, even […]

Maple, Granola Brittle 2.0

Last Friday, I wrote about my own recipe testing adventures for Food52.com and lucky for me (and well, I guess you too) this website also has a few readers who are willing to get their own pots and pans dirty for the good of the team. If you’ve been following Sodium Girl for a while, you may remember the runny, gooey mess that was my attempt at making Salt-Free Maple, Granola Brittle. This was my first try at being a home-made Willy Wonka and I’m being kind when I say that I wasn’t successful. I not only failed to make […]

Me, You, Blue River Stew

It has been a food education-palooza this week. I’ve clocked approximately 8.7 hours of watching Food Network competitions and past episodes of Top Chef. I’ve made shrimp-less shrimp curry with fellow blogger and Wiley Publishing author, Allison Fishman, over Skype. And tonight, I’m taking a very prestigious course in chicories (read: free wine and fun Bi-Rite staff) at 18 Reasons. That’s a lot of info-cramming for one low sodium brain. But of all the didactic shenanigans, I have to say that one of the must fulfilling (and filling) events in these past seven days has been recipe testing for food52.com’s […]
