Eat, Meet, Write

I’m overwhelmed. Not in the stressy way. But in the “oh my god this is what makes life so grand” kind of way.  Because over the last two weeks, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to meet so many of you out there in the blogosphere. I’ve heard your stories. We’ve swapped low-sodium recipes. We’ve even had a hug or two hundred. And I’m blown away by the amazing low-sodium community that exists. And they waves that, together, we are creating in the culinary and health world. We’re changing the look of salt-free food, people. And things are only going to […]

Winning: Can’t Be Beet Bloody Marys

Some things feel impossible. Like learning how to tie your shoes. Doing long division.  Making salt-free bloody Marys. But luckily, there’s this little tiny fiery cheerleader inside all of us, just waiting for those can’t do moments, that lights up and pushes forward to make those bow knots. To use a calculator. Or, of course, make a version of the classic salty brunch drink from scratch, at home, without all that sodium. Tiny fiery cheerleaders just love a good obstacles. It’s when they do their best work. And last week, I swam through almost 700 (SEVEN HUNDRED) of your best […]

2013 Love Your Heart Recipe Rally

Let’s begin with the facts and the numbers, because that’s always a very good place to start: The recommended daily sodium intake for a healthy American is 2,300mg, which equals 1 teaspoon of salt The recommended daily sodium intake for over 50% of adults (due to health problems, age, and other needs) is 1,500mg, which equals just over 1/2 teaspoon of salt Nine out of 10 Americans (that’s 90%) eat almost double the recommended daily intake, averaging over 3,500mg per day (and if you really consider the soy-sauced sushi, chorizo burrito, and milk swamped cereal…that number climbs even higher and adds […]

Pigs In Salt-Free Blankets

I’m not going to waste much time here, because we have some little piggies who are cold and need to be wrapped in blankets. STAT. But I will take a moment to explain why I decided to makeover this little party treat. Between the piggy (mini hot dogs) and the blankets (prepared croissant rolls), one serving can equal over 1,760mg of sodium, more than the 1,500mg daily recommended intake for most Americans. And you haven’t even added in ketchup and other dipping sauces. Not to mention that these are appetizers, which means there is a whole sodium-filled meal waiting to be consumed […]

Cookbook. Cookbook. Cookbook.

This is a wall. A wall of pictures. Beautiful pictures. Pictures taken by the amazing Matt Armendariz, styled by the amazing Adam Pearson. Pictures that, when taken off the wall, look this. photo by Matt Armendariz  photo by Matt Armendariz  Pictures that then got put into a book. A book with more pictures and words, and pictures with words on top. Words that tell stories. Words that tell you how to make salt-free bloody Marys. Words that tell you how to travel or eat well in dorm rooms or live low-sodium on-the-fly. Words that (hopefully) give you hope, and inspiration, and […]

Chia Cranberry Pudding Cups

Figgy, it’s time you hung up your figgy hat and called it a day. Because chia seeds are in town and they are taking over pudding. For those of you who haven’t met chia seeds yet, let’s just say that they are the new wonder ingredient. They’re rich in omega-3 fatty acids (which is a good thing); they’ll help you look young forever (fingers crossed); they are actually the seed used in Chia Pets (not kidding); and apparently, they also make preparing an elegant, low-sodium dessert ridiculously simple (get a spoon ready). The inspiration for this sweet adventure? Well, first, […]

Cook Lightly, Make Chili

I failed my juice cleanse. Me, the queen of restrictions, failed miserably at my juice cleanse. A cleanse that I started yesterday morning at 9am, following my morning cup of coffee (the first offense). Ending shortly after 6pm, just hours after my second cup of coffee and thirty minutes before a bowl of quinoa and vegetables. Let’s just say it was all down hill from there. I even snuck in some chocolate before bed. It just wasn’t for me. Because while I love of shots of green and blended beets, I totally overestimated my ability to love an all liquid diet. Turns […]

Love and Bok Choy

Most people talk about the five essential tastes: sweet, savory, salty, sour, and umami. But there is a sixth taste that makes even a simple chicken dinner something memorable: love. Love is the most powerful ingredient in your kitchen. Love pairs with everything from fish to waffles to tomato soup. Love is more precious than black truffles and lobster. Not to mention way less expensive. Love is always in season and always sustainable. Love is something that everyone can afford, that everyone can share, and that everyone can eat. There are no restrictions on love. And you can never use too […]

12 Days of Low-Sodium Blissmas

Today, we’re talking gifts. The gift of health. The gift of knowledge. The gift of pretty plates, portable boom boxes, low-sodium pickling spices, and everything else you need to make your diet feel absolutely LIMITLESS. And whether you celebrate Chanukah, Christmas, or any other holiday, just remember that anytime is the right time to treat yourself or a loved one to these wrapable goodies and bites of wisdom. So let’s begin with the gift of health. Just like last year, I’ve created a Pinterest board inspired by my favorite items in my low-sodium tool belt. There are book shelves, dehydrators, […]

Fa La La La Latkes

Before we talk about latkes we need to talk about potatoes. I love potatoes. I reaaaaaaally love them. Over the moon love them. Like, I would pay fifteen dollars for a small cup of salt-free french fries kind of love them. So now that we’re clear about this, let me confess something else. I hate potato latkes. Not the good crispy once-in-a-lifetime perfect latkes. But the soggy, grey, what-the-hell-happened latkes that seem to be my fate every Chanukah. And let me tell you this, it’s not that I don’t try. Because what could be more perfect that a patty made from […]
