Weekly Obsessions 12.20.13

Okay, first of a all I finally made those banana bon bons from Nom Nom Paleo that I was talking about a few weeks ago. And you know what? BONKERS. Totally crazy good. Absolutely bananas. Literally. And speaking of bananas, um hello, next week is Christmas. And even for those of us that don’t celebrate this holiday, we all know that the next few days will be hurried with wrapping, gifting, and spreading love. If this stresses you out a little, have another bon bon. But hopefully these low-sodium gift guides (here and here) have helped you make your wish […]

Weekly Obsessions – 12.13.13

Last week we discussed gifts for the novice cook: measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls,  dust busters, and non chemical cleaners. You can’t go wrong here. Which means this week, we’re talking presents for the pros. Or that budding culinary genius in your life who’s ready to experiment with xanthum gum, make baguettes from scratch, smoke fish on their stove, and dehydrate beef jerky. Or at least make a pint of mint chip ice cream. This is the gift list where low-sodium dreams come true. It is full of the tools and tricks that make the impossible dish possible. That […]

I haven’t even written down my  wishes for pretty plates and new measuring cups and a sous chef named Jacques. I have, however, been very busy eyeballing other people’s gorgeous holiday guides. Here. Here. And Here. Which made me think that it is time to make a little list of my own (or perhaps several) to help you get or gift all the goodies one needs for a great low-sodium diet this holiday season. To start, let’s talk about that beginner cook in your life. The one who […]

Bringing Hasselback

If you asked me to choose between a baked potato and some baked french fries, I’d have a really hard time coming up with an answers. (Okay, I’d probably pick the fries). But thanks to a little technique called “hasselback” you never have to make that choice again. This is awesome. It’s a game changer. And you may just want to skip the mashed potatoes this year for this simple starchy side that delivers the comfort of mushy potatoes and crispy skin, all at the same time. Weekly Obsessions 11.15.13

Sometimes the best things in life take a little work. Like finding low-sodium cheese and salt-free soup stocks and mini phyllo dough cups with only 30mg of sodium per serving. Those things. But thanks to the interweb getting the best things don’t have to take a lot of time or energy. Just a little planning. And that’s what I want to talk about today. I want to make sure you have everything you need for your Thanksgiving feast, no matter what you plan on making. And enough time to order them. So let’s begin, shall we? SOUPY SPUDS AND STUFFING: Want […]

Pomegranate Blackberry Winter Tart

When the ancient philosophers of times long ago decided how things should work, someone silly came up with the idea that dinner always comes before dessert. And I guess I understand. If you served me caramel filled doughnuts before a hearty helping of vegetables, I might never make it to that cauliflower and broccoli course. Let’s be real. But let’s also break the rules. Because sometimes dessert needs to proceed the roasted meat and sautéed greens. Sometimes pumpkin pies need to be replaced with pomegranate and blackberry tarts. And sometimes, as we prep for the Thanksgiving meal ahead, we need […]

Weekend Obsessions 11.08.13

This week’s theme: try it. We are three weeks out until my favorite day of the year, aka Thanksgiving. Usually, on this holy of holy food days, by the time dinner is finally served I’m so stuffed with stuffing and soup and tastes of turkey drippings (don’t judge) that I can barely finish my plate. But somehow I usually manage to finish two. Because did you hear what I said? Favorite. Day. Of. The. Year. Just wait a minute, though. Could things get better? By golly they could. Because on top of gravy and mashed potatoes and yes, turkey drippings, […]

BBQ Apple Chips

Here’s the thing about October. It’s all about apples. Apple cider. Apple picking. Apple fennel soup. Apple pie. Apple cobbler. Apple potato hash browns. Appleseed, Johnny. Apple candy. Apple bobbing. Apple baking. (I think I’m having  a Forrest Gump moment). Point being: apples are super transformative. They are also naturally low in sodium and kidney friendly. And from the long list of apple recipes and apple activities that are possible, it’s pretty clear  that apples are the star of this fall party. So move aside pumpkin. This fruit has your number. But that’s not the end of the story. Because there’s […]
