Thoughts on Release and Sesame Seeds

Sometimes you just need to let go. You need to find time to sit down and watch Country Strong and cry your eyes out over a few notes of twang. Or make it to that yoga class to stretch, breathe, and namaste. Or just shake that sesame shaker so hard that the entire thing opens and all the little seeds spill out. Sometimes blockages just have to get blown apart. And sometimes you don’t know when it will happen. But you just have to accept it and go with it. Like with this pork stir fry. It started out as […]

Miso, Maybe

This is salt-free, low-sodium Miso soup. Sort of. A few months ago, I began writing a list of all the super salty foods I missed eating: chicken wings, deep dish pizza, pretzels with mustard, ravioli, pad thai, and of course, miso soup. And one by one, I knocked each of them down, conquering the salt, and replacing it with my own mix of flavors and spices. Then, I got to my friend miso. That silky Japanese broth made from dashi and miso powder or paste that delicately slips down your throat. That bowl dotted with seaweed threads and tofu cubes, […]

Recipe for Success

I’m totally fine doing things by myself. I can tie my own shoes and I can brush my own hair. I’ve even gone to Shabu Shabu alone, at 11:30 on a weekday because I had undeniable cravings. And that was absolutely fine by me. But I find that life is a lot more exciting when you experience it with others. Especially with friends that make you laugh and keep you from poking yourself in the eye with a fork when you are supremely stressed out. These past six months have been filled with a lot of cooking, writing, editing, and […]

Have A Strawberry

I don’t know about you, but last night’s most historical events have left me pretty speechless. I can’t seem to make much sense out of writing about roasted beer butt chicken, homemade broths, or any other culinarily-themed topic I had planned. So in the meantime, while I regather my thoughts, have a juicy strawberry. On me. And today, instead of food musings, I just want to say thank you to the men and women who have been and continue to fight for our safety, justice, and freedom at home and abroad. I hope, in the wake of last night’s events, […]

Low Sow-Your Own

I think my heart just exploded. In a happy, non-messy kind of way. Just looking at this picture fills me, no, overwhelms me, with tingles of warmth and excitement. Because this picture is just the beginning of what is to come. Of what is to sow. Of what is to grow! Three friends, toiling away in the gentle sunshine, on a small plot of earth, overlooking a small piece of heaven. I mean, do you see that view? That view shouldn’t be legal. But forget about the view for a moment and think about the dirt. I get to play […]

Back to School

Somehow I graduated college. It was a miracle, really. Not because I was partying so hard that I forgot to go to class. I always remembered to go to class. It was a miracle because I spent the majority of my Junior year at a different, not often visited part of campus – the Hospital. And even though I shouldn’t have graduated on time, my professors, my classmates, and my parents all made sure that if I wanted to get my diploma with the rest of my friends, than that is what would happen. I wrote essays while hooked to […]

Disasters and a Difference

I’m not a baker. This woman is. It is even in the title of her blog. But I? No, I’m not a baker. I’m an experimenter, an adventurer, a thrower-inner. I am an expert low sodium cook. And when it comes to the exact science of baking, I am short-cuts, I am messy, and I am always surprised that my cookies turn out looking like this. Let’s just say Monday was a good day to not go sky diving. Because in my little kitchen, it seemed like one disaster was followed quickly by another. I celebrated like a fool when […]

Love Your Heart Recipe Rally

I had a dream. I know. I’m one national holiday too late. But still, I had a dream. And no, it wasn’t the one where I was flying over buildings or showing up late to school without my pants. Or flying pant-less over buildings to make it to school on time. That would be absurd. This was a real life dream and something that could impact more than just me and my personal well-being. This was something that had the potential to change people’s approach to food. To health. To life. This was a dream about making bagels, pizza, and […]

Tempting Low-Sodium Tempura

There’s a storm coming. It’s true. California has been blessed lately with gorgeous, sunny weather (a little freaky since it is February). But that’s all about to change. Cause there is a storm on its way. Heading this way. At this very moment. At least that’s what Al Roker told me. And how do you not trust Al Roker? But as for the gale force winds and torrential downpour everyone is expecting…well, these aren’t exactly the kind of storms that concern me. Instead, my keen El Nino eyes are locked on the incoming flour tornados, soup explosions, meaty hail, and […]
