Low-So Sauces

For anyone tackling a low-sodium diet for the first time, start by making sauce. Lots of sauce. From scratch. Why? Because when the fridge is full of colorful sauces, that YOU made, your food will never be without flavor. People tend to fear that low-sodium food means bland, boring food. And of course, this is not true. There are more spices on the spice rack than just salt. And beyond seasoning, it’s easy to enhance a dish just by adding texture (think: toasted nuts) or unexpected additions (think: cauliflower stuffed burgers) or smells (think: fresh mint). But there’s something about drizzling a sauce over a thick steak, […]

Low-So Grilled Party Kebabs

Oh, hey! We are entering yet another summer weekend. Which means another excuse to heat up that BBQ. And today, I want to talk about skewers. Or kebabs. Or whatever you want to call grilled food on a stick. Because these finger foods make for an easy canvass to play with big flavors and bright colors. Which means an easily adaptable feast that will please both low-so and non-low-so guests. And let’s face it, will show that BBQ’s don’t have to just be about burgers and buns. Last year, I did a project for my good friends at Mrs. Dash to […]

Low-So Good Fourth of July Recipes

Happy birthday, America! This past week was a really excellent one. And if you’re like me, you’re ready for some celebrating. And some ribs. And some fireworks (both of the explosive and flavor variety). This month, I want to talk about low-so tips for BBQ season. Because these seemingly innocent gatherings around the grill can rack up some major sodium counts. Be aware that you can easily reach close to 1,000 milligrams of sodium (equivalent to two-thirds of most adults’ recommended 1,500 mg daily allotment) with only a single beef hot dog (over 400mg of sodium for most brands), the bun (over […]

Whole Foods Market Hack Challenge

Yesterday I expressed my love (obsession) for Whole Foods Market. And today, I am going to show you — in great detail and delicious food — exactly why their store rocks my low-sodium world. As a part of the Whole Foods Market Hacks challenge, I was tasked with the task of creating TWO MEALS A DAY to feed the THREE MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY all for $125. Or in other words roughly 42 PLATES OF FOOD FOR $3 DOLLARS EACH. Got that? And let’s be honest, while I keep to a strict low-sodium diet, I do not keep to small (slash: normal) portion sizes. Sometimes I eat steak the size of my […]

Lo-So Labor Day

Three day weekend. Three day weekend! Let’s forget about the fact that summer is coming to an end and that you’ll feel a little bit naughty every time you wear a white pair of pants from now until May. And let’s pause instead to celebrate the fact that we have a three day weekend ahead of us. Which means we have plenty of time use all that vibrant produce still around, time to try out new dishes, and time to feed them to our friends. So here’s a roundup of some of my favorite summer dishes from this site and around the web — […]

Salt-Free Chunky Carrot Dressing

Carrots aren’t just for rabbits. Or dips. Or stews. Or over-steaming in microwaves. Fresh carrots are a thing of beauty. They actually come in a rainbow of colors, which will easily jazz up a raw veggie party platter. And they are pretty much “in season” all year long. Which you can’t say for asparagus or cherries or white pants. Best of all, carrots are higher in natural sodium than most whole ingredients. It charts in at 50mg per large carrot. Seriously. Take a look at a bottle of carrot juice the next time you’re at the market. Which is why they […]

Low-Sodium Croque Madame

Today, we head to France. In first grade, I  got to choose between Spanish or French classes. This was at a moment in my life where I had just learned to tie my own shoes and ride a bike. But was still totally dependent on my elders when it came to things like bathing, eating, and pretty much getting anywhere besides my front driveway. And it was at this exact moment, when I barely started to scratch the surface of big things to come, that I was  given the great responsibility of choosing a foreign language. A choice that would […]

Weekly Obsessions 1.10.14

This has been a super week for substitutions. And I am so beyond grateful to thekitchn.com for letting me kick off the new year with five days of  food swaps. So to keep things short (and tasty), here are some links from the web this week that will help you reinvent your favorite dishes and give some unsuspecting ingredients a chance in the spotlight. OLD INGREDIENT, NEW TRICK: Do you sometimes wish we lived in a world where broccoli could be breadcrumbs, bananas could be buttercream, potatoes could be quiche crusts, cauliflower could be burger fillers, and lentils could be gravy? Well […]

Weekly Obsessions 11.01.13

On most days, I’m  the kind of person that makes mini cauliflower-stuffed burgers from scratch (yes, these are a thing). And slow-stewed ragu. And even pasta by hand. But I’m also the kind of person that buys pre-peeled garlic. And canned no-salt-added tomato sauce. And pre-cut fruit. And pre-washed lettuce. And pretty much anything that makes low-sodium cooking a little easier. Point being: it’s OKAY to take cooking short cuts. Especially when you cook most of your food at home, not from cans, but from scratch. So don’t be ashamed of that pre-peeled garlic. Own it. It’s a smart move in […]

Low-Sodium Candy Land

I wish I could tell you that I pass out brussels sprouts on Halloween. Or that I fill my own trick or treat bag with kale chips and goji berries. But then I would be a liar. And people like liars as much as people who pass out brussels sprouts on Halloween. So instead, let me give you the shocking truth. I have an insatiable sweet tooth/teeth/jaw. And while I make healthy eating my mission 364 days out of the year, there is one special night that I let my candy freak flag fly. (Halloween). Let’s not dance around. Simply […]
