Walgreens Way to Well Health Tour

A personal chef and a personal trainer are not the only ways to personalize your health care. Just think about all the people surrounding you who keep you happy and strong. There are of course the doctors and the nutritionists. And maybe an acupuncturist or physical therapist. But don’t forget about the guy behind the butcher counter who helps you choose a lean cut of meat and then explains how to best cook it. That chef who constantly prepares colorful and flavorful low-sodium meals that make your friends jealous. The clerk at your local pharmacy who answers questions about medication even after the doctor office is closed. […]

Jump for PlateJoy

Guys. What if I told you that with a click of a button, some of your favorite Sodium Girl recipes (and everything you need to make them) could magically land on your doorstep? Well I hope that your answer was an enthusiastic “HUZZAH,” because starting today, you can do exactly that. Thanks to PlateJoy! HUZZAH! For some of us, grocery shopping is our favorite part of the day (guilty as charged). But for many others, the hardest part of healthy eating and low-sodium cooking is the time it takes to get to the store, buy the right ingredients, and then get back home, where […]

Pass the Dash

Mrs. Dash has been one of my BFF’s for a long time. She’s the original sodium girl, creating a range of colorful salt-free spice and herb blends that wake up, perk up, and heat up any recipe. But Mrs. Dash can be a bit modest and often hides in a spice rack or a spice drawer. Which is why, this week, I am so excited to bring her (FINALLY) to the dinner table and the spotlight. So without further ado, may I introduce to you the new MRS DASH TABLE BLENDS. A gorgeous line of classy glass bottles filled with finely ground spices and […]

Whole Foods Market Hack Challenge

Yesterday I expressed my love (obsession) for Whole Foods Market. And today, I am going to show you — in great detail and delicious food — exactly why their store rocks my low-sodium world. As a part of the Whole Foods Market Hacks challenge, I was tasked with the task of creating TWO MEALS A DAY to feed the THREE MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY all for $125. Or in other words roughly 42 PLATES OF FOOD FOR $3 DOLLARS EACH. Got that? And let’s be honest, while I keep to a strict low-sodium diet, I do not keep to small (slash: normal) portion sizes. Sometimes I eat steak the size of my […]

Whole Lotta Love For Whole Foods Market

Some people love shopping for clothes. Some love shopping for home decor. Or cars. Or puppies. But I love shopping for food. At a corner store. A supermarket. A farmers market. Wherever edibles are sold. I love knocking on cantaloupe. I love choosing the oddest cut of meat. I love discovering the products on the shelves that weren’t there the day before. Grocery stores are my happy place. And luckily for me, I live down the street from my favorite food destination of all. Whole Foods Market. Which I may or may not visit up to three times a day. […]

Broccoli Crusted Fish Sticks

I’ve been on a major broccoli kick lately. And my six year old self is in total shock. But my thirty-something self is totally blown away by broccoli’s chameleon like capabilities. Not to mention its wonderfully herby flavor that it lends to favorite dishes. Like casseroles. Tater tots. Spreads. And now, fish sticks. I just can’t seem to get enough of it. Broccoli, you had me at broccoli. So with a bag of low-sodium (but stale) blue corn tortillas on hand, I found myself with the urge to bread and bake some proteins. And with a quick pulse in the food processor and a cup of […]

Low-So Broccoli Tater Tots

You may be skeptical, you may be amazed. But either way, behold the broccoli tater tot! (I think I just won motherhood) But before we get into specifics, let me explain something: I’m not a believer of “hiding” vegetables from my daughter or a green-fearing person of any age. But I sure do love the idea of stuffing vegetables in really yummy things, wherever and however possible. Like tater tots. Everybody loves tater tots. This is not up for discussion. And recently I’ve found that broccoli can do a lot more than steam and turn into mush. It makes a great pesto. I love it chopped and […]

Lo-So Labor Day

Three day weekend. Three day weekend! Let’s forget about the fact that summer is coming to an end and that you’ll feel a little bit naughty every time you wear a white pair of pants from now until May. And let’s pause instead to celebrate the fact that we have a three day weekend ahead of us. Which means we have plenty of time use all that vibrant produce still around, time to try out new dishes, and time to feed them to our friends. So here’s a roundup of some of my favorite summer dishes from this site and around the web — […]

Quick Cracker Hack

I will never forget how I felt when I discovered my first bag of salt-free potato chips. It was a low-sodium snacking revelation! Then came salt-free tortilla chips, beet and sweet potato chips, and finally, salt-free rice crackers. All products that increasingly improved my ability to stay fueled and well appetize’d throughout the day and evening. But what about feeding others? Most of the time, my guests were surprisingly pleased with the taste and texture of these salt-free options. Many starting to opt for the salt-free versions. But as for the flavor options — well, they all fell to the blander […]

Unprocessed: Coconut Choco Tacos

As a little kid, I loved the idea of school. So much so that, even before I entered Kindergarten, I made my parents create fake homework assignments for me. And once I got older and started to get real homework, I still loved school. Mostly because of the colored pens I got to buy every August in prep for the year ahead. And Choco Tacos. While my parents kept a pretty healthy household — no sodas, no sugary cereals, no candy, although I’m sure they had their own private stash — when it was finals week, all bets were off. And our awesome […]
