Travel Tips: Pack to Snack

True, the holidays are over. But that doesn’t mean your travels are. And whether it is a much needed destination vacation, a visit to family, or a last minute flight for work, every trip requires preparation. And for those with special diets, the packing list has a few extra items to tend to. Mainly, food. But dietary limitations don’t have to take the spontaneity or flavor out of your adventures. Nor do they have to add stress to well-deserved R and R. With a little extra effort, anyone with any dietary needs can stay full no matter where the journey […]

Breathing and Blueberry Banana Bread

As I kid, I  announced new career aspirations as often as the months changed. In January, I wanted to be a veterinarian. By August, an archeologist. And come October, a mermaid. So let’s just say commitments and resolutions have never been my thing. Which is why each new year, I don’t make promises. I choose mantras. A word that helps define my every move for the days and weeks to come. A word that remains the same even as plans change and life does its twisty turny thing. And this year, I picked the word BREATHE. To remind myself to […]

Weekly Obsessions 12.20.13

Okay, first of a all I finally made those banana bon bons from Nom Nom Paleo that I was talking about a few weeks ago. And you know what? BONKERS. Totally crazy good. Absolutely bananas. Literally. And speaking of bananas, um hello, next week is Christmas. And even for those of us that don’t celebrate this holiday, we all know that the next few days will be hurried with wrapping, gifting, and spreading love. If this stresses you out a little, have another bon bon. But hopefully these low-sodium gift guides (here and here) have helped you make your wish […]

Southwestern Quinoa Bowl

Right now, the world is filled with caramels, fruit loafs, chocolate covered what-nots, and sugar plum fairies. Everywhere I look, I see sweets and breads and sweet breads. And I’m definitely not complaining about this. It’s my favorite time of year and I enjoy every bite of it. But since the holidays bring with them a major candy and carb rush, it’s nice to find some balance in between all the parties and glasses of bubbles. And by balance I mean a Southwestern Quinoa Bowl, complete with homemade BBQ dressing. And blue corn chips. Yep, balance. It’s a lighter, healthier, more […]

Weekly Obsessions – 12.13.13

Last week we discussed gifts for the novice cook: measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls,  dust busters, and non chemical cleaners. You can’t go wrong here. Which means this week, we’re talking presents for the pros. Or that budding culinary genius in your life who’s ready to experiment with xanthum gum, make baguettes from scratch, smoke fish on their stove, and dehydrate beef jerky. Or at least make a pint of mint chip ice cream. This is the gift list where low-sodium dreams come true. It is full of the tools and tricks that make the impossible dish possible. That […]

Travel Tips: Holiday Edition

For a long time, I thought a special diet and medical needs meant staying at home. Travelling felt like too difficult of a task to attempt. And hotel rooms, unfamiliar cities, and museum-filled itineraries felt more like frightening obstacles than alluring opportunities. I wondered, without my kitchen, could I ever keep up my diet? Without my gym, could I keep my body moving? And without my safe place (i.e. my home), could I explore the great world outside my door, enjoy every minute of it, and return home just as healthy if not healthier than before? The good news is, […]

Weekly Obsession 12.6.2013

Holy December. Have you guys started your holiday shopping yet? I totally most definitely have not. I haven’t even written down my  wishes for pretty plates and new measuring cups and a sous chef named Jacques. I have, however, been very busy eyeballing other people’s gorgeous holiday guides. Here. Here. And Here. Which made me think that it is time to make a little list of my own (or perhaps several) to help you get or gift all the goodies one needs for a great low-sodium diet this holiday season. To start, let’s talk about that beginner cook in your life. The one who […]

Low-Sodium Scotch Egg

As a child, feeling awe struck occurred with great frequency. There were magic tricks (someone has my nose!), there were waffles (which start as gooey liquid and then become, well, WAFFLES), there were butterflies (caterpillars…need I say more ?), there was glitter (so glittery), there was Cirque Du Soleil (which meant hours, okay a lifetime, of dancing by myself in my room). There was awe. Everywhere. Then logic and middle school and to-do lists crept in. And feeling giddily overwhelmed by bubbles and full moons seemed silly. Awe got covered up by “ah whatevers.” And stopping to play with leaves […]

Bringing Hasselback

If you asked me to choose between a baked potato and some baked french fries, I’d have a really hard time coming up with an answers. (Okay, I’d probably pick the fries). But thanks to a little technique called “hasselback” you never have to make that choice again. This is awesome. It’s a game changer. And you may just want to skip the mashed potatoes this year for this simple starchy side that delivers the comfort of mushy potatoes and crispy skin, all at the same time. To make a hasselback potatoes, you simply make cuts along the “back” of the […]
